There's buzz going around Sacramento that a new dumpling restaurant is better than the beloved Din Tai Fung dumplings. I love dumplings in general, but hearing this amped me to go try out the place. Destination: Journey to the Dumpling. I'm pretty sure the name of the restaurant was inspired by Stephen Chow's movie Journey to the West. It's about a Monkey King. I don't have time to explain it, so google it. Ok!?
Journey to the Dumpling is still very new, so I'm able to turn a blind eye and let a few things slide. But beware, it's the only restaurant of its kind in Sacramento and lines will be long as well as the wait. We waited about an hour to be seated. Yes. An hour. It's busy during dinner, and crazy busy during the weekend. I highly suggest coming here for an early dinner, or simply just wait when the restaurant finally settle down. You simply can't get angry at a restaurant for being so busy. I find that ridiculous. And everything that can go wrong with a new restaurant does/can happen: slow service, food taking long to come out, food is sold out... it HAPPENS. So chill. Alright!?
This is a mom and pop shop. First of it's kind really. The great thing about this place is the dumplings are made fresh. The dough, the wraps, everything. That means it's not pre-made, frozen, and then tossed in the pan or oil. Dumplings in general take a while to cook, and is very well worth the wait. The dumplings are super juicy, savory, and oh so delicious! The pan fried buns?! My favorite. XD It's soft, crunchy, savory, juicy, and meaty! They also offer appetizers, noodles, and soups. But the dumplings are the true star of this restaurant.
I honestly believe the staff/chefs/servers here are truly doing their best to satisfy all the customers that walks in their restaurant. Indeed, the wait was long, from waiting to be seated, to getting our food. However, the staff did stop by our table frequently to check up on us and update us on our food. Plus, they gave us a discount, which was really nice of them.
To me, this is truly a gem in Sacramento. Have a little faith and give them a chance. Because the dumplings are truly worth the journey! (pun intended)
